Hector Vargas, JD, is the Acting Chief National Initiatives Officer at SAGE, where he leads SAGE’s National Projects Department, which includes the organization’s first social enterprise SAGE Care, the National LGBTQ Elder Housing Initiative, the National LGBTQ Resource Center, the SAGE-HRC Long-Term Care Equality Index, and the SAGE Center of Excellence and Equity Innovation Lab. The department’s project’s portfolio also includes fiscal management and support for the Diverse Elders Coalition.

Prior to joining SAGE, Vargas served as Executive Director of GLMA: Health Professionals Advancing LGBTQ Equality (formerly known as the Gay & Lesbian Medical Association) and was a leading voice on LGBTQ health. He has served on President Obama’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and has more than 20 years of LGBTQ and civil rights advocacy experience, including on staff with Lambda Legal, the National LGBTQ Task Force, the American Bar Association’s Section of Civil Rights and Social Justice, and Equal Justice Works.
