SAGE Condemns Trump Administration on Erasure of Protections for LGBTQ+ People

Trump Administration Continues Attacks on LGBTQ+ Community With Latest Proposed Rule

[New York, NY] Today, the Trump administration announced a proposed rule that would greenlight taxpayer-funded discrimination against LGBTQ+ older people and LGBTQ+ people writ large under federal grant programs administered by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. It would also strip away non-discrimination protections on the basis of religion and sex.

LGBTQ+ older people, as well as many others, benefit from these programs that often help those at the margins of society. Every day, LGBTQ+ older people across the nation benefit from HHS-funded grant programs. Now their access to those programs is at risk.

This latest announcement from the Trump administration is yet another salvo in the war the administration has conducted against the most basic rights of LGBTQ+ people. In this year that marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising, enough is enough. The federal government should be championing non-discrimination protections, not advancing discrimination.
