SAGE Statement on House Approval for Respect for Marriage Act

The following statement can be attributed to SAGE CEO Michael Adams:

“Today we celebrate and acknowledge an important milestone as the US House of Representatives sent the Respect for Marriage Act to the desk of the President. When we celebrated the Supreme Court’s historic marriage equality decisions in the cases of Edie Windsor and Jim Obergefell, we never imagined that this legislation would be necessary. But as we’ve been reminded in recent years, we can’t take court precedents and protection of our rights for granted. We applaud Speaker Pelosi, Congressman Jerry Nadler, and all of their House colleagues in getting this bill over the finish line with bipartisan support. Our elder pioneers who spent decades fighting for marriage equality need these protections now more than ever. While securing the freedom to marry is essential, we still have a lot more work to do. LGBTQ+ elders need the critical protections provided by bills like the Equality Act, which would bar discrimination in housing, elder care and services, federally funded programs, employment, and other areas key to a decent quality of life. We won’t stop until LGBTQ+ people of all ages have the full protections they deserve.”

LGBTQ+ elders age their way, but can they age in place?
