Ian Lee Brown,

Ian is vice-president and chief diversity and belonging officer at Duke University Health System. He leads the organization’s diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging strategy to ensure these elements are embedded as imperatives within the system’s culture, ensuring employees are able to live their authentic selves and deliver exceptional services to our diverse population of patients and other customers.

Prior to this role, Ian served in various senior-level roles in national healthcare, senior living, and educational organizations, including Erickson Senior Living, the University of Maryland Capital Region Health (formerly Dimensions Healthcare) and the Howard University College of Medicine, leading culture, diversity, talent, community outreach, and operations. In these roles he had responsibility for more than 1,200 employees and managing budgets in excess of $200 million.

Ian completed undergraduate studies at Brooklyn College in New York City. He earned a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies at Chicago’s Lake Forest College and both a Master of Science in Applied Behavioral Science/Organizational Development and Graduate Certificate in Senior Housing and Healthcare from the Johns Hopkins University Carey Business School in Baltimore. At Hopkins, he also spent a year in the Mid-Atlantic Health Leadership Institute at the Bloomberg School of Public Health. A former graduate theological student, Ian studied for the Episcopal Church priesthood that included clinical pastoral education at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital in New York City.

Ian has served on numerous community non-profit boards, including the Dean’s Alumni Advisory Board and the Underrepresented Minority Advisory Committee at the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, Concerned Black Men, Inc. of Washington, DC, the James Hormel LGBTQ+ Advisory of the San Francisco Public Library, and the Hingham, Massachusetts Public Library Board of Commissioners.

Ian lives with his husband, Lovett Bryan Bean, live in Durham, North Carolina.
