As Pride Month shines a light on LGBTQ+ issues, the Older Rainbow Community of Albuquerque (ORCA) is supporting older LGBTQ+ individuals who face challenges due to lifelong discrimination, poorer health, and financial insecurity.

Havens Levitt, who graduated from Sandia High School in 1971, said, “I think most of us know in our hearts there’s nothing wrong with us. But there’s all this outside information making you doubt yourself.” Levitt, a former teacher with Albuquerque Public Schools for 29 years, still supports students facing similar struggles. She noted that many who came out in the 70s and 80s lacked support, affecting them to this day. “But many of us have a distrust of all institutions. We don’t know who will really be supportive of us. And so, one of the things that’s true for older queer people is a tendency to not access the services we’re entitled to,” Levitt said. […]
