Since his passing in 2008, the Frank Harr Foundation has been established to keep the humanitarian spirit of its namesake alive, as we carry his passion for social justice forward in Southeastern North Carolina and beyond. Our mission of educating the public on matters of importance to the LGBT citizens of the Cape Fear Coast has focused on sensitivity and diversity training to providers in these underserved communities (human service professionals, non-profit organizations, and most recently the New Hanover County Senior Resource Center).

SAGE Affiliate:

The public launch of SAGE Wilmington of the Cape Fear Coast, on September 27, 2013, is a historic celebration of inclusion that joins the growing numbers of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) elders, with service providers and community resources, making our area a more attractive destination for seniors to visit, relocate, and retire to.  Current progressive national policy, as evidenced by the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell and the Defense of Marriage Act, is crossing political and geographic boundaries, as the wave of change reaches the post-Amendment One landscape of North Carolina.

Equipped with the data from our groundbreaking new survey of the health and human service needs of LGBT people who live in Southeastern North Carolina, the Frank Harr Foundation will work with community partners like the Area Agency on Aging, Lower Cape Fear Hospice, and the University of North Carolina Wilmington, to address these needs through innovative programming.  SAGE Wilmington of the Cape Fear Coast believes that healthcare professionals, empowered with accurate information about the unique needs and challenges of LGBT elders, will respond with culturally sensitive services that will enhance the quality of life for these communities on the Wilmington Cape Fear Coast.

Recent Highlights:

At the groundbreaking launch of SAGE Wilmington of the Cape Fear Coast, on Friday, September 27, 2013, at the Wilmington City Council Chambers, Mayor Bill Saffo read a proclamation, honoring our affiliation.

Following our launch, SAGE Wilmington of the Cape Fear Coast will recruit local LGBT seniors to participate in our first national grant.  SAGE Story, sponsored by AARP and the national SAGE organization, will document the unique stories of these underrepresented communities in southeastern North Carolina, as we compete in a national competition that will make these rich histories visible to a larger audience.
