About SAGE Metro DC

SAGE Metro DC is a volunteer driven organization whose mission is to raise awareness of the concerns of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) elders in the DC metropolitan area and to provide a voice for issues facing older people. We work tirelessly to adhere to the mission by identifying the needs and concerns of older adults, addressing these needs with advocacy, and by the provision or facilitation of education and training. SAGE Metro DC encourages the participation of all individuals concerned with the issues of older adults regardless of age, sexual orientation or gender identity.

Recent Highlights

As part of a regular monthly series, SAGE Metro DC recently hosted the presentation “Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid” for LGBT older adults and those who work and advocate on their behalf. The presentation highlighted the benefits that are available now to LGBT people; the barriers and potential hardships for LGBT couples and individuals; and the policy work going on to eliminate inequities under current laws. Speakers included Jan Witt, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, and Laurie Young, Ph.D., National Gay and Lesbian Task Force.

SAGE Metro DC’s program Helping Works, partners with others in the DMV area to assist older adults to continue to live independently at home. Partnering with AARP’s Legal Counsel for the Elderly, SAGE Metro DC helped an older lesbian couple clear their deck, yard and basement.  It has partnered with Marriott employees to paint the kitchen for a DC resident.
