About SAGE Long Island

SAGE Long Island is a bi-county (Nassau and Suffolk) not-for-profit organization dedicated to meeting the unique needs of the Long Island GLBT senior community by providing education, advocacy, and social support services.  It is committed to providing high quality, life enriching programs that value age, gender, racial, ethnic, religious and economic diversity and is further committed to fostering greater understanding, support and advocacy for the rights of GLBT seniors on Long Island.

The population of GBLT people age 50 and beyond has grown exponentially on Long Island over the last several years. After conducting focus groups with more than 100 Long Island GLBT seniors, a growing call came from the community to have a home where GLBT seniors can access supportive services, create rich social networks and share their legacy. Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders-Long Island became that place.

In 2005, after several years of planning, SAGE Long Island was launched. SAGE Long Island is part of a unique and efficient new model of service delivery, The Long Island GLBT Services Network (The Network). The Network is an association of three organizations that serve the GLBT community throughout the lifespan-LIGALY, serving youth 13-21; The Long Island GLBT Community Center (The Center), serving adults and families; and SAGE Long Island serving GLBT seniors age 50 and beyond.

Recent Highlights

The LGBT Network announced the first LGBT and LGBT age-friendly senior housing development in the New York tri-state area. It will be built on the current site of the Long Island LGBT Community Center in Bay Shore. The development will have 50 housing units and will be anchored by a brand new, 6,000 square foot state of the art LGBT center for The Network. The new center will provide health, recreational, nutrition, social, cultural and other programs and initiatives.
