George Stewart was selected as a White House Champion of Change, and was featured on the White House blog. Click here to read his post.
George Stewart is a volunteer and participant at the Harlem program of SAGE (Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders). George has long been an advocate for positive social change, having witnessed a lifetime of stigma and discrimination against LGBT, HIV-positive and African American people. Since coming to SAGE three years ago, George has started volunteering at The SAGE Center (the first full-time LGBT senior center in the country), and has become one of our most outspoken advocates on behalf of LGBT older people. He regularly attends New York City Council meetings and meets with state representatives in Albany—and he hopes others will do the same, saying, "I encourage LGBT older adults, and their friends and families, to find ways to involve themselves in advocacy. They will be surprised by the sense of community, patriotism and responsibility that comes with being part of a larger crowd and movement."
