Established in 1965, the Older Americans Act (OAA) is the country's leading vehicle for funding and delivering supportive services to older people in this country. OAA holds enormous potential for millions of LGBT older adults, a population with profound needs that will surge over the next few decades. OAA is now up for reauthorization, creating an unprecedented opportunity to ensure that these sizable resources support LGBT older adults and their loved ones. What are the distinct challenges facing LGBT elders, and how can their aging experiences be enhanced through an LGBT-affirming Older Americans Act? This brief presents some answers—and SAGE's official recommendations on the Older Americans Act.
