Radicalesbians, the first Lesbian organization with an explicitly Feminist agenda, spun off from the Gay Liberation Front in April 1970 when women of GLF held the first NYC all-women's dance. Later that Spring, lesbians from GLF and the Women's Movement, calling themselves the Lavender Menace, took over the NOW Congress to Unite Women and distributed the manifesto, woman-identified-woman, written by Radicalesbians. From these events, Lesbian-Feminist politics and culture were born. Radical Lesbian activism continues today embracing issues of class, racial justice, the arts, academic activism, and Queer and Trans Movements.

In celebration of an unbroken tradition of Radical Lesbian Activism, Hana Malia, Flavia Rando, Shawn(ta) Smith, Ellen Shumsky, and Fran Winant will share their experiences of activism in the turbulent times of the 1970's and today, and the impact activism has had on their lives. We invite you to participate in an intergenerational conversation about Lesbian Feminist activism - then and now. Marking the 40th Anniversary of Radicalesbians, there will also be a slide show of photographs from the book Portrait of a Decade 1968-1978: Photographs by Ellen Shumsky and panelists will be available to available to sign the book.

Speakers include: Ellen Ensig-Brodsky Having come out soon after Stonewall and during the rise of the Feminist Movement, Ellen launched her LGBT activism as co-founder of the Unitarian-Universalist Gay Concerns Committee in Huntington, Long Island. She then moved back to her roots in NYC, where she co-founded Pride Senior Network, participated in the Empire State Pride Agenda's Health & Human Services Network, and served as President of the Manhattan Borough-Wide Inter Agency Council on Aging (MBIAC) Jim Fouratt Jim was a co-founder of the Youth International Party (YIPPIE!), the Gay Liberation Front, and Act UP, as well as a founding board member of the NYC LGBT Community Center. He has been featured in numerous documentaries and provided commentary on CNN and Stephen Colbert, among others. Jim was a witness to and participant in the Stonewall rebellion, and has been inciting, shaping, fomenting and provoking American culture for over 40 years. Jerry Hoose A West Village resident for over forty years, Jerry participated in all four nights of the Stonewall riots and was part of the Christopher Street Liberation Day committee that organized the first Pride March. He went on to help found the first militant gay organization, the Gay Liberation Front (GLF), and was instrumental in putting together the first dances by and for gay people. He has lived a completely gay-centric existence ever since. Rose Jordan Rose was a Stonewall Rebellion participant, a member of the original Christopher Street Liberation Day Committee, a member of the New York Radical Feminists, a participant in the original Women's CoffeeHouse at 7th Avenue Southm, and co-chair of the NYC chapter of Daughters of Bilitis until it was disbanded. She was also host of The Lesbian Radio Show on WBAI-FM for six years, interviewing many feminist authors and activists. Jay Kallio Jay (formerly Joy) Kallio became an LGBT activist in 1972 after being fired for being a lesbian while employed by the NYS Division for Youth. Upon discovering that there were no laws or recourse to protect LGBT people from discrimination, Joy started with a position as Program Director for Lesbian Feminist Liberation, an offshoot of the Gay Activist Alliance, and spent many years fighting for legislative protections for LGBT people. Joy transitioned in 2006 to become Jay, and found there were few protections for transgender people in employment or health care access. He continues his fight for equal rights for all on this new frontier. Barbara Police One of the first women involved in the feminist movement, Barbara worked with Bella Abzug and other politicians on a number of projects, including Take Back the Night. She also worked on Majority Report, the first feminist newspaper, as well as many other publications over the years. Most recently, Barbara was one of the plaintiffs in Yetta Kurland's law suit to keep St. Vincent's open.
