Today, approximately 28 percent of people living with HIV in the U.S. are over 50; by 2017 that number is projected to grow to 50 percent. In October 2011, SAGE partnered with the AIDS Community Research Initiative of America (ACRIA), Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) and the Office of National AIDS Policy to host a historic White House meeting on HIV and aging. Leading advocates from around the country discussed program interventions and policy solutions to better support the first generation of older adults to live and age with HIV/AIDS in large numbers. And a few months later, Senator Bernard Sanders (D-VT) announced that his official bill for reauthorization of the Older Americans Act would include, as a priority, defining older adults with HIV, as well as LGBT elders, as populations in greatest social need.
