About SAGE Central Virginia

SAGE Central Virginia is part of the Gay Community Center of Richmond. In response to the community of GLBT older adults, the Gay Community Center worked with other agencies and organizations committed to the needs of older adults to create SAGE Central Virginia, an official affiliate of SAGE.

We are guided by a volunteer committee that encompasses individuals from aging service agencies, gay, lesbian and transgender community leaders, academia, and the faith-based community. The steering committee is working to identify current and long-term goals and sustainable strategies to meet the goals. The Gay Community Center of Richmond is committed to this project and has identified SAGE Central Virginia as one of its main priorities.  The volunteers are passionate advocates for change and growth in SAGE Central Virginia, working to develop programs that will affirm and embrace the LGBT Older Adults in Central Virginia.

Currently most of the programming is educational and social in nature.  We are educating LGBT Older Adults on topics that will help them navigate some of the challenges of aging and to find the joys and positive experiences.  We also have social events on a regular basis so that the LGBT Older Adults in Central Virginia can meet each other and start forming and reinforcing the social networks that become even more important as we age.

We are also passionate about offering training to the aging services community in Central Virginia.  There are 2 trainers certified by the National Resource Center on LGBT Aging.

Recent Highlights

We have an ongoing Writing Workshop that allows SAGE Central Virginia participants to find their creative voice.  This successful program started with one section in the Spring of 2012 and there are now two sections, on alternating weeks.  We will be continuing with two sections in the Winter/Spring of 2013.  We will celebrate this program with participants reading from their works and sharing their voices at our annual Holiday Social.  The popularity of the writing workshop is leading us to add other creative workshops in 2013, in addition to our monthly social and educational programming.

We recently co-sponsored a sold-out, SRO, showing of Gen Silent with one of the local colleges, and we are following it up with educational programming on “the Five Wishes” and legal paperwork to protect ourselves and our families.
