Bertis Shankle

Bertis Shankle is the Manager of Volunteer Programs at Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE), the country’s largest and oldest organization dedicated to improving the lives of LGBT older adults. The bulk of his duties take place at The SAGE Center, the nation’s first municipally funded LGBT senior center, headquartered in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood.
Prior to SAGE, Bertis worked in advertising for print publications such as The St. Petersburg Times, Clearwater Sun, Indiana (Pa.) Evening Gazette, American Banker and Civil Engineering. He also worked atonline ticketing company Play-by-Play.com, and at non-profits ASCE, where he edited technical journals, and HAI, where he brought arts into institutional settings. His bachelor of science degree is in Journalism and Communications from the University of Florida, in his home state.
As part of his professional role as a volunteer manager, Bertis has held a board position for the New York Association of Volunteer Administrators and is a founding member of a yet-unnamed roundtable of volunteer managers working in the LGBT community in metro New York City. Bertis has been an employee of SAGE for four years, but is proud to say his first four years at SAGE were as a volunteer.
