Sometimes when LGBT seniors come to SAGE what they most need is the help of a dedicated social worker–whether it's for assistance in navigating through complicated government benefits or help with a housing or medical problem or some counseling about being gay and getting older. Ginny D'Antonio is a SAGE social worker who dedicates her life to serving LGBT older adults.
For Ginny, SAGE is a calling that came later in life. She retired in 1998 after more than 30 years in the social work field, including a long stint as the Director of Social Work at the Manhattan Psychiatric Center. But Ginny had an instinct that there was something else important that she needed to do. So in 1999 she came out of retirement and joined the social work staff at SAGE.
Ginny says that after more than a decade at SAGE she is "still thrilled to be practicing social work the way I always knew it should be done." And SAGE is a special place to do that work. As Ginny explains, "It's especially gratifying to be able to do this for the elders of our community." When Ginny isn't working at SAGE, she's with her partner of more than 20 years, Karen Griswold, and their two cats Amanda and Sammie. On August 23, 2010, Ginny and Karen were married in Vermont.
